PATAGONIA

5 reasons you should add this MotoDiscovery feature destination to your bucket list

The South American continent offers a wealth of adventure riding treasures. We’ve been riding there since 1995, and by far the most popular region is the southern reaches of Chile and Argentina known as Patagonia.

Technically it is bound by the Atlantic Ocean to the East the Pacific to the West, sandwiching the Andean mountain range, a stunning system of fjords with temperate rainforests, glacial lakes, and barren windswept grasslands. It is this exact dynamic that offers you a thrilling motorcycle riding experience, unlike any other on the planet.

Here are 5 good reasons why you should add this Patagonia motorcycle tour to your bucket list:

FAQs

A once in a lifetime natural phenomenon. You must plan and act now!

What about the Eclipse?

We intend to be stationed in the direct path of the Eclipse 2024 that affords optimum viewing and darkness duration. Weather and other factors of Mother Nature may choose to interfere, however, within the community known as “eclipse-chasers”, conditions are predicted to be as ideal as you will find anywhere in the hemisphere for experiencing this total eclipse of the sun.

How is the weather?

MotoDiscovery travels during what we consider to be optimum riding seasons. Altitudes on this tour range from high deserts of 4,000 feet to mountains reaching 7,000 feet. April is the dry season in this part of Mexico, so rain is not expected. Temperatures can range from cold mornings with rapid warming through the day. Weather updates are provided in a MotoDiscovery e-mail Communique right before the tour.

Is it safe?

Know that we consider this a priority. Over 30 million travelers come to Mexico on average each year. While we consider the safety question to be overblown, we still take it seriously and recognize that there are territorial criminal elements engaged in drug related activity in many parts of Mexico. These elements rarely bother tourists as this only brings unnecessary attention to them. It is a strange coexistence. We encourage you to contact us if you have any questions or concerns knowing that at any time, anywhere, we feel your security is compromised, we will be honest and respond accordingly.

For all international tours we recommend that everyone take advantage of the State Department’s Smart Travellers Program. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. https://step.state.gov/step/

Is this suitable for a passenger?

Yes! You will want to share this once in a lifetime event with your riding partner. Roads are paved all the way. The services, quality of accommodations and uniqueness of experiencing the phenomenon of the Total Eclipse of the Sun 2024, will make this a truly romantic experience. Please inquire about options for non-riding spouses and friends to join this tour.

I don’t speak Spanish.

No worries. We have native speakers on all of our tours in Mexico. Many people in Mexico speak English. We encourage you to learn a few words and we will gladly provide some lessons along the way if you wish!

Is this a good opportunity for photography?

There will be a professional photographer with the group. Together, we will make sure you capture this once-in-a-lifetime event. Please read up on specialized solar filters for your specific camera and lenses. You can expect some informal tutoring from our specialists to come your way in our pre-tour materials as well as on the road. Capturing this event is special to us. We know it will be for you too!

What motorcycle is best suited for this ride?

This tour is suitable for any well-maintained and freshly serviced road-worthy touring, sport touring, or dual-purpose adventure motorcycle. Trikes and sidecars are also welcome.

How are the roads?

Expect road conditions to vary in quality, ranging from open multilane toll highways to narrow country roads with mountainous curves. There may also be some brief gravel sections when accessing a few select lodges, as well as possible road construction detours.

What documents are required to enter Mexico?

Have you checked your passport lately? Is it current? You will need one. Your motorcycle registration that is in your name, Mexico vehicle insurance, driver’s license and a credit card for temporary importation and tourist entry, are also needed. Additional details on this matter will be sent to you prior to the tour.

What about bringing my own motorcycle?

This tour is designed for use of your personal motorcycle. MotoDiscovery will inform you of reasonable Mexico insurance options and the required documents for your temporary importation. We’ll provide information on storage of a trailer or truck in El Paso. We will go into detail on bike preparations as well.

Do I need special insurance?

Yes. Your USA motorcycle insurance will not serve you once in Mexico. Quality and reasonably priced Mexico insurance is available. Information on this matter will be provided in your pre-tour information e-booklet.

How are the accommodations?

MotoDiscovery strives to provide the best possible accommodations for our riding guests. Be mindful that “expedition” style travel often has us traveling in lesser developed regions. Therefore a degree of tolerance and flexibility when it comes to quality, is expected. Overall we find lodging on this tour to be exceptional.

What about the food?

As is the usual MotoDiscovery policy we encourage ordering from an open menu and enjoy sharing with you a great dining experience. You won’t be disappointed. Those with special dietary requirements can count on our cooperation in helping you to achieve your dietary preferences.

How is the weather

MotoDiscovery travels during what we consider to be the optimum riding seasons. In April, rain is unlikely, but temperatures can vary depending on the time of day and altitude. Expect a range of dry 90°F (32°C) by late afternoon in the desert, to frosty lows in the mountains around mid-40s°F (around 5°C) at night. Be prepared for any weather conditions!

How big are the groups?

As with any MotoDiscovery tour, you can count on receiving the best service. Please note that this group will be limited to 12 motorcycles.

Will I get more information?

Tour preparation is important. You will receive a comprehensive tour booklet electronically that will address all your questions. You are encouraged to call or send us an email at any time if you have additional questions. We welcome your inquiries.

When should I sign up?

Now! This is a high demand event. Early sign ups are essential in order that we can secure the best of accommodations and services. Don’t delay.
