The South American continent offers a wealth of adventure riding treasures. We’ve been riding there since 1995, and by far the most popular region is the southern reaches of Chile and Argentina known as Patagonia.
Technically it is bound by the Atlantic Ocean to the East the Pacific to the West, sandwiching the Andean mountain range, a stunning system of fjords with temperate rainforests, glacial lakes, and barren windswept grasslands. It is this exact dynamic that offers you a thrilling motorcycle riding experience, unlike any other on the planet.
Here are 5 good reasons why you should add this Patagonia motorcycle tour to your bucket list:

Ruta 40 South America Expedition
A mega riding adventure riding the length of Argentina’s legendary Ruta 40
We categorize this South America motorcycle tour as ADVENTURE, and while not highly technical the route does have sections that are not paved and calls on participants to have at least some off-road riding experience and the appropriate physicality. A dual purpose “adventure” style motorcycle is required. In this case, you will be riding your own motorcycle (rentals also available) with MotoDiscovery managing the logistics of ocean freighting your personal motorcycle to and from South America. Shipping is included in the tour price. The route runs from near the Bolivian border, riding south along the legendary Ruta 40, the full length of Argentina, with excursions into neighboring Chile, all the way to Tierra del Fuego and Ushuaia at the southern tip of the continent. Note that advance reservations are essential, and space is limited to 12 motorcycles. All reservations must be received with deposits by no later than six months prior to the tour date. FAQs
Is this motorcycle tour good for a passenger?
Yes. We’ve hosted many ladies and passengers on South America adventure tours with exceptionally positive reactions. Would you like references? Contact us.
What if my passenger can’t do the whole tour?
It is not too uncommon for passengers to be tight on time. Partial tours may be available permitting your partner to join us for some of the highlights. Inquire with MotoDiscovery to discuss your options.
How difficult is the riding?
It is not technical. Unpaved sections may have occasionally brief stretches of deep gravel. There may be cross winds in Patagonia. Any experienced motorcycle touring enthusiast with at least some off road riding background should manage this tour just fine
What percentage is unpaved?
25% is scheduled to be unpaved with optional off road opportunities to expand this slightly.
How long are the riding days?
We prefer to take our time. The pace is moderate. Riding days average roughly 250 miles (some less, some more) with multiple two day stops. Opportunities do exist on many stages to extend your time in the saddle with optional excursions. You will appreciate the MotoDiscovery approach to travel.
What is the best motorcycle for this tour?
This bike is “big bike” friendly however midsize (400-900 cc) adventure machines are really more than adequate. In the end it is the one that you are most comfortable and competent with.
Considerable information will be provided to inform you of bike preparations and expectations.
How do I prepare my bike?
We’ll provide a comprehensive list of preparations. Tires will be addressed. It is important for the entire team to have their motorcycles well prepared.
What if I just want to rent a motorcycle?
We can do that . We will have an expedition prepared motorcycle put in the container from the USA. All you will have to do is fly in and out. Inquire with MotoDiscovery for details.
I am uncertain of my rider skills?
Don’t feel alone. While this is not a technical off road tour, you could do well with getting some rider training. Consider improving your skills by joining MotoDiscovery on one of our Adventure Rider Immersion Training Tours. And as a bonus, sign up to do our training tour and receive a certificate valued at $500 for use on the Ruta 40 Adventure
What about the shipping of the motorcycle?
This is something we have done for decades. For this tour we recommend using your own bike! You simply get your bike to Houston, Texas and we take over from there. It is an involved process with considerable paperwork and red tape, but we have the best in resources and years of experience. You will enjoy the foreplay of getting your own bike ready for this remarkable journey!
When do I have to have my motorcycle in Houston for shipping?
We ask that you have your bike in Houston at our secure warehouse shipping facility by no later than Dec 18th. So you see the importance of early reservations! We will request considerable documentation so that our office can prepare the necessary paperwork.
How are the accommodations?
No camping! MotoDiscovery is not a budget tour operator. Our preference is to stay in upper scale accommodations although we feel this adventure ride does not require the level of luxury offered on many of our tours. And there could be limitations in certain regions. Still, our riders universally complement us on the quality of our lodging. You won’t be disappointed.
How big will the group be?
We can only ship to South America what the container size will permit. The first twelve motorcycles will be the lucky ones. Group size limited to 12 bikes. Better sign up fast.
What if you get less than 12 motorcycles to sign up?
It happens. We will then implement Tiered Pricing which, for a slight premium charge, we can run the tour as scheduled, maintain the high quality of standards and inclusions and enjoy the benefits that come with an even smaller group size.
Is language a difficulty?
Not when you have staff who are multilingual. We are there for you.
How is the weather?
This motorcycle tour is run during what we consider the optimum riding season. You are crossing latitudes of varying climate zones so there is some degree of unpredictability, however we feel it will be most pleasant.
Will I carry my own luggage?
Yes, however the support vehicle will accommodate space for one duffel bag per rider. You will be provided one (1) expedition duffle bag in which you can place items to be carried in the support vehicle in order to conveniently lessen your load. The balance of your belongings you will carry on your bike.
Is it safe?
Of course there are the usual advisories for travelers however in Chile and Argentina there are no security issues worthy of mention. You will be impressed with the warmth of the people in this part of South America.
For all international tours we recommend that everyone take advantage of the State Department’s Smart Travellers Program. The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling and living abroad to enroll their trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Click the link below to enroll.
I’d like to visit Antarctica while I’m in the region. Can you help me?
Yes. It requires an early commitment and at least four days extra at the end of your tour. Contact MotoDiscovery for details.
When should I sign up?
PLEASE…do it now! The group size is limited to 12 motorcycles. Extensive pre-planning is involved. Should the tour size fall below the 12 minimum, we will run the tour with fewer riders using a Tiered Pricing concept. The more we have the better the value! Invite your friends! Start planning today.
