5 reasons you should add this MotoDiscovery feature destination to your bucket list

The South American continent offers a wealth of adventure riding treasures. We’ve been riding there since 1995, and by far the most popular region is the southern reaches of Chile and Argentina known as Patagonia.

Technically it is bound by the Atlantic Ocean to the East the Pacific to the West, sandwiching the Andean mountain range, a stunning system of fjords with temperate rainforests, glacial lakes, and barren windswept grasslands. It is this exact dynamic that offers you a thrilling motorcycle riding experience, unlike any other on the planet.

Here are 5 good reasons why you should add this Patagonia motorcycle tour to your bucket list:

Moab Immersion Motorcycle Training Tour

Enjoy the beauty of Utah and Colorado, obtain motorcycle riding instruction and take a tour, all in one!

MotoDiscovery pioneered the concept of combining a motorcycle tour with ADV motorcycle training. The ability to take newly acquired skills and actively use them in a touring environment enables participants to better retain those skills. The success of this program centers on a curriculum, the essence we credit to be drawn from some of the best trainers in America, building a MotoDiscovery training experience unique in character. Most importantly, this motorcycle training tour addresses the fundamentals of off-road adventure riding, in a small group, low intensity nonjudgmental atmosphere. This tour is perfect if you are new in your desire to explore the world of adventure touring, or if you simply need to cast off bad habits and refine your existing skills. To add to the training, we tour the vicinity of beautiful Moab. The Moab Immersion MotorcycleTraining Tour is the perfect platform for a private event for you, your family, club, dealership and friends. What a great gift to a budding adventure riding enthusiast. Groups are small and sell out early. Rentals are available or you can use your own motorcycle. Call MotoDiscovery for additional details.

How difficult is the riding?

This question is always asked and the answer is the same. The difficulty depends on your experience, physicality and spirit. There is NO mandatory single track on this tour. This ride combines excellent dirt roads and 2-track trails with twisty pavement sections that can’t be missed. All portions of the route are drivable by our support truck which will follow behind the group or meet at predetermined intersections on all days of the tour. This tour is best suited for smaller street-legal dual-sport motorcycles between 250-800CC equipped with proper off-road tires.

Who is a good candidate for a training tour?

If you’ve never been on the dirt but have the desire and physical means this is a great start. More experienced off-road riders will also gain from this training tour as we focus on the fundamentals often lost over time.

Who will be coaching me?

Our coaches are the best. They not only demonstrate but they explain the physics of what makes for proficient riding. Safety is first. Always. Our coaches are touring people just like you and they have traveled internationally, experienced the challenges that come with international touring where the best roads and treasures are found off the pavement. Because we keep our groups to no more than 10 riders, you can count on getting their personal instruction.

What kind of curriculum can I expect?

We start off with a classroom session, move to an area where posture, body position, and other important basics are learned. By the end of the first day of training, slow speed skills are demonstrated and exercised. The second day we get into the real world environment of off-road touring, gradually elevating the technicality of the ride as you feel you are ready to advance. The key here is that the groups are small (maximum of 10). The training is geared to your personal progress and we don’t move ahead until you are ready.

Will there be a support vehicle?

Yes. Our support vehicle will be with us for the duration of the event to carry your personal gear, tools, water and provide riders with the confidence to ride their own pace knowing we have your back. Non-riding participants (space is limited please give us a call to confirm) may also join us in the support vehicle.

Should I rent a bike or bring my own?

If you have one of the “mega” touring machines such as the BMW R1200GS, and you have not been off road with it, you may benefit from riding a lighter weight rental where the weight and performance will not be so overwhelming – so renting should be considered.  Fear of dropping your bike is also inhibiting. Contact us to reserve a rental today.

What can you tell me about your rental motorcycles?

Rental offerings vary from season to season. Each unit is accessorized to offer optimum comfort and enhanced protection and rideability. Popular models include Suzuki DRZ400 and the venerable Yamaha WR250R, lightweight but perfectly suitable for the dual purpose role of road and off road travel demands of this event. Locations in Grand Junction, Colorado and Phoenix, Arizona – Contact MotoDiscovery Rentals for details. Rental Terms and Conditions.

I’m an experienced off-road rider but a little rusty. Can this course be good for me?

Of course. You will advance more quickly. You can then concentrate on those techniques that minimize stress and physical exertion, reducing fatigue, riding more smoothly and pushing the limits of your motorcycle. But we must stress that this course is not about speed. To the contrary. Slow speed maneuvering skills are essential. Managing all levels of terrain comfortably from rocky surfaces to loose sand is where we want to take you and even experienced riders will find this “tune up” to lead to more enjoyable riding.

Anything I should know about the 3-Step Hideaway?

While each training tour is subject to itinerary modifications, we often use the 3-Step Hideaway as a training venue and to accommodate our overnight stays. Situated in the high desert, about 50 miles south of the City of Moab, here are a few things you should know:

  • There is no cell service nor internet service available at 3-Step. There are points nearby where one can get a signal, but for the most part, prepare to be ‘off the grid’ for a few days.
  • Regarding alcohol, Utah has strict alcohol and tax laws that regulate the sale of beer, wine, and spirits. 3-Step has a variety of domestic and micro-brew beer for sale in the Cantina. If you prefer wine or spirits, you must arrange to bring your own or contact us and we can arrange to pick you up some in Colorado on our way to the event.
  • Bring a headlamp (or a flashlight) – Because the 3-Step is completely solar powered, you will need a light to get around after dark. The buildings and cabins all have electric lights, however.
  • We cannot guarantee a single room for you at 3-Step Hideaway. Single occupancy is, however, available for all other accommodations following our departure from 3-Step.

How large are the groups?

Higher quality service and better individual attention to your training needs will result when groups are smaller. Group size is limited to ten (10) tour participants plus staff however historically the group size is between 6 to 8 participants..

Can I bring my friend, wife, husband, etc?

Yes. We have a comfortable overland support vehicle that can accommodate a limited number of passengers in comfort and style. If you are planning to ride 2-up, please understand that this is not an event to learn to safely ride off-road with a passenger.

Can I safely store my truck/van/trailer in Grand Junction during the ride?

Arrangements can be made to store your vehicle and trailer in Grand Junction at the rendezvous hotel. Please contact the hotel directly with information on your vehicle and trailer to confirm.

What sort of gear will I need to bring?

This will be covered in our pre-trip communication emails along with other valuable preparation tips.  Keep in mind that space is limited in the support vehicle and gear can be stowed in Grand Junction at the hotel while on the tour.

Will there be any tent camping?

There is no tent camping on this event.

When should I book my tour?

Now. For a better touring experience, we keep our groups small which frequently results in tours “sold out”.

Can you design a special Moab tour just for me, my friends, club or colleagues?

Yes. MotoDiscovery creates special private customized tours around the world each season. We are experts and regard this as our specialty. Contact us today for more information, or go to our Custom Tour Questionnaire link to begin the process
